Group D Recaps: England Don`t Lose and Suarez Bite Hurts Italians

Today everything was at stake in the Group D matches. First was Costa Rica, who qualified to the Round of 16, vs. England, who`s already eliminated. Joel Campbell of Costa Rica nearly scored early when he beat English keeper Ben Foster but a deflected drifted the ball just wide. Dan Sturridge of England shot one in the 12th minute that was just wide. Celso Borges curled a free kick shot that Foster tipped onto the crossbar. In the 27th, Sturridge got the ball and tripped in the box but the ref didn`t call a penalty. Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas rushed to beat Sturridge in the box to block the shot away before Sturridge got to control it. Bryan Ruiz passed one to Christian Bolanos, whose shot Foster made a save of. Sturridge again barely missed his curled shot to the far post just wide. Costa Rica topped the group and will now face Greece.
Next was Italy vs. Uruguay. Winner would advance, and Italy would also advance with a tie.Andrea Pirlo of Italy forced Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera to save it. Alvaro Gonzalez headed one in the 8th minute that Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon stopped. Edinson Cavani shot one that Buffon blocked and Cavani`s rebound was also blocked by Buffon. Italy went down to 10 men when Claudio Marchisio tripped Egidio Arevalo Rios that resulted in a red. Luis Suarez had his impressive shot by Buffon after Suarez broke through the defense. Controversy began in the 80th minute when it looked like Suarez bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder. Chiellini showed the ref the teeth marks, but there was no call. Uruguay advanced on the winning goal in the 82nd when Diego Godin headed a shot past Buffon from a Uruguay corner.
